I would go with the 35GM without a second thought between the two, first I don't like the rendering of the 35 1.8, and size and weight means nothing to me, at least not between a lens weights about 300g vs 500g, by the way, I am shooting with Voigtlander 35 F2 APO for landscape and Sigma 35 1.2 for everything else, that tells you how weight and size in my eyes. I have read a lot of reviews, still cannot decide. For street, the smaller size of f/1.8 is an advantage. I like the image quality and overall performance of GM. It will be used for street and low light photography. I currently have the 24GM but the results I see at the 35mm focal length really intrigue me I know I can crop in for an effective 35mm using 24mm, but I haven’t been happy with the results, astro is just different - the pixel loss to me in this setting is noticeable and distractingĪbsolutely agree - the FE 1.8 is such a good lens, but I know I’ll use whatever 35mm lens I get for astro and the GM will suit my needs though I’ll be selling something to justify the new lens, maybe even two other lenses.

To me street shooting is about discretion and freezing moments, it doesn’t need to be complicated or burdensome. If I were to strictly shoot street, and had an affinity for black and white, the 1.8 would be the lens to choose - the natural vignetting, compactness and autofocus as well as the absence of the aperture ring, one less distraction - shoot aperture priority with minimum and maximum iso, make the 1.8 so effective in this setting from my perspective. That said, the Sony 1.8/35 is a pleasant lens, pretty good, compact and light weight. But this lens is huge, heavy and bulky and NOT the lens I would use for ordinary photography.įully agree that the 1.4/35 GM is the best compromise between bulk and weight when wanting stellar optical quality. Have the Sigma 1.4/40 for night sky photography. Do occasionally use the lens for astrophotography, but it is NOT the lens I would use primarily for astronomy. In my case the Sony 1.8/35 does a great job for ordinary photography. I’ll end up using a lens for astrophotography and the GM is better corrected for both of these. For my preference, it is about the astigmatism and purple fringing.
